An Evening with Terry Fator
“One of the Best Entertainers
in the World” |

Simon Cowell was right. Terry Fator is “one of the best entertainers in the world,” as he proved on April 20. Some guests called it the best Vogel Alcove Arts Performance Event in 19 years. Mr. Fator took time out from his five-year $100-million run at The Mirage in Las Vegas to wow the Meyerson Symphony Center audience. Accompanied by his seven-piece band, he performed impeccable covers of songs by Aaron Neville, Louis Armstrong, Garth Brooks, James Brown, Etta James, Elvis, and others. |
|
| As charming and down to earth as he is talented, Mr. Fator spent the previous morning visiting the Vogel Alcove, where he and Winston the Impersonating Turtle delighted a smaller, shorter audience. During his act, Mr. Fator employs a bevy of puppets with distinct personalities to great comic effect. Dallas Morning News reporter Michael Granberry wrote that the event “high point by far was Fator outfitting an unsuspecting Dallas businessman in a mask, wig and dress to make him look like Cher, as Fator, à la Sonny Bono, sang “I Got You Babe” for both of them. Now that was funny.”
Two hundred forty members of the Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas opened the show, entering the Meyerson performance hall from every doorway. According to Mr. Granberry, the children “were selected from a combination of four Children’s Chorus choirs” representing grades 4 through 8. He wrote in his blog that their “angelic voices” were the “most moving aspect” of the evening performance.
The evening was not only moving and entertaining but also incredibly important to the Vogel Alcove’s financial stability, thanks to the outstanding leadership of event co-chairs Cynthia and Forrest Miller and Erin and Mike McKool, who exceeded this year’s goal despite an extremely difficult economy. Mr. Miller serves as Group President-Corporate Strategy & Development of AT&T Inc., a Paramount Sponsor of the 2010 event.

AT&T Inc. has also become the very first sponsor of next year’s event. Mr. McKool is Founding Partner and President of McKool Smith, a Pinnacle sponsor of this year’s event. A sponsor since 1994, his law firm and partners this year surpassed their previous high levels of giving.
The event vice chairs Debbie and Gerald Barnes, Lael and Peter Brodsky, Lynae and Dean Fearing, Rita Sue and Alan Gold, and Tracy and Kent Rathbun also recruited numerous sponsors and advertisers that were integral to the success of the event. In addition, Mr. Brodsky served as Board vice president/event. Board member Rick Lacher chaired the Lacher Committee whose effective sponsor solicitation made a significant impact on event revenue. The top sponsors who supported the 2010 event are listed on the opposite page.
Ms. Rathbun and Ms. Fearing, with the help of Ms. Miller, planned a superb dinner for more than 900 sponsors and their guests. They secured the donation of gorgeous floral centerpieces and gift cards for the sponsor dinner tables, which featured paintings by the Alcove children framed by Jessica and Laurent Therivel. |

The centerpieces, gift cards and paintings were auctioned at the event’s first-ever silent auction. Ms. Fearing and Ms. Rathbun also obtained hundreds of delectable desserts for the reception following the performance, many of which were donated by their restaurant, Shinsei, and by Fearing’s and Kent Rathbun Concepts.
Event attendees received the beautiful commemorative program created by the Fossil Design Studio as a pro bono project for the ninth year in a row. Becky Winslow brought her artistic ability and skill to the book’s professional design and layout. Blaine Leist again expertly managed the production process. Don Clampitt and Clampitt Paper and David Besgrove and Ussery Printing helped reduce the cost of the program with their inkind donations toward the paper and printing.
The ads in the commemorative program provided critical event revenue, thanks to the Ad Solicitation Committee chaired by Lisa Cregan with special recognition to vice chair Gerald Barnes and his colleagues at Neiman Marcus, who again secured many important advertisers.
Fred Ashman and Mark Maisonneuve of Maxcel Multi Image produced and directed an enlightening and engaging video about the Alcove with the guidance of vice chairs Lael and Peter Brodsky. It is the company’s fourth pro bono video for the Alcove. Following the video, Board president Alan Perkins reported on the Board’s new long-range plan, paid tribute to honorees Jeneane and Aaron Pearlman and Tina Wasserman for their past service as event volunteers, and recognized the co-chairs’ tireless efforts, presenting them with Steuben hearts as tokens of the Alcove’s appreciation.
Mr. Miller and Mr. McKool praised the generosity of the event sponsors and advertisers and the dedication of volunteers. Gail Cooksey and Molli Samuels of Cooksey Communications generated outstanding publicity to promote this year’s event, donating their public relations expertise for the ninth consecutive year.

A big thank you to those who worked to make the 2010 benefit a success: the co-chairs; vice chairs; Event Executive Committee; Benefit Committee; Lacher Committee; and Alcove Board; with the skilled professional assistance of Anna Irving, Alcove director of development who has managed the event for 13 years; and consultants Wolford McCue and Adele Demler. The 2010 event sponsors, advertisers and general ticket patrons funded 62 percent of the Vogel Alcove’s annual expenses, helping create opportunities for the youngest children of homelessness families who deserve a chance to succeed.
