About 100 students showed up to SMU’s south quad in 104 degree temperatures to raise awareness about homelessness in Dallas. In the first annual “Sleep in a Box” event held August 31, 2011, students were given cardboard boxes, paint and supplies, and asked to bring their imagination to create “homes” that spoke to homelessness in Dallas. These teams of students paid an entry fee and then raised money in the hopes of winning several lucrative prizes. At the end of the night, the students raised $3,368 for Vogel Alcove.
